The Pingtung Performing Arts Center also won the 2016 Architecture Garden Excellence Award (Public Building Landscape Category). The selection process for the Architecture Garden Excellence Award is rigorous and credible, progressing from preliminary to final rounds, and then to a decisive round by experts, scholars, and industry professionals. The award’s coverage has expanded from the greater Kaohsiung area to now include regions south of Yunlin, Chiayi, and Chiayi County. The construction of the Pingtung Performing Arts Center began in 2008 after the central government approved and allocated a budget subsidy, leading the Pingtung County Government to commence various preparatory and construction tasks for the center.

The performing arts center is located on the former site of the Council of Agriculture’s Kaohsiung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, in the southeastern part of Pingtung City. The site covers an area of approximately 1.88 hectares, with a building area of about 0.59 hectares. The structure consists of one basement level and three above-ground floors, reaching a height of 19.2 meters. The building spaces include a concert hall, experimental theater, outdoor plaza, and rehearsal rooms. Its functions can be divided into a specialized concert hall and a multi-purpose experimental theater.

The concert hall and experimental theater are housed within two dynamic frameworks, situated near the Pingtung University Concert Hall, making them suitable for various types of musical performances and accommodating up to 1,050 people. The experimental theater, close to the Pingtung Farmers’ Association, adopts a black-box format and is designed for experimental drama and dance performances, with a capacity of 150 people. The outdoor plaza is a multifunctional space for diverse artistic and cultural activities. Designed with the concept of a traditional Taiwanese three-courtyard house, akin to the historic “ting” (courtyard), it forms an open and airy space that can accommodate around 1,200 people.

The opening art season of the Pingtung Performing Arts Center was spectacular, continuing until December 31. The completion of the center also signifies its role as a key hub for music performances and educational programs in southern Taiwan.
