Huge whale light installation a major highlight – Six must-photograph spots at Pingtung Lantern Festival

Last year, the Pingtung Lantern Festival made its debut along the Wannian River, where the riverside light displays received high praise. In 2018, the Pingtung County Government collaborated with the city government to expand the lantern area, stretching from the Wannian River to Millennium Park. There are 20 sets of tech-inspired, interactive art installations that combine with the local landscape to create five major lantern zones. The festival kicked off on February 5 and will run until March 4.

The main visual design of this year’s lantern festival uses flickering lights to depict the Wannian River, symbolizing the continuous flow of tourists to Pingtung. Starting from Shengli East Road in Millennium Park, along the banks of the Wannian River to Minsheng Road, the route is divided into five major lantern zones: “Happy Times,” “Blessings & Healing,” “Sonic Spectrum,” “Charming Pingtung,” and “Tropical Scenery.” These zones combine lighting, music, and interactive installations to showcase Pingtung’s diverse local culture.

Millennium Park, making its first appearance as a lantern zone, features seven light installations. These include the “Window House of Time,” made with old wooden doors and window frames, depicting the image of military dependents’ villages; the “Light Tree Tower,” where visitors can pedal to generate kinetic energy and electricity, experiencing green energy; and the “Fruit Comes Prosperous” dog-shaped lantern made from fruit crates, paying homage to the Year of the Dog.
