Huge whale light installation a major draw – Six must-photograph highlights of the Pingtung Lantern Festival

Last year, the Pingtung Lantern Festival made its debut along the Wannian River, where the riverside light displays were highly praised. In 2018, the Pingtung County Government collaborated with the city office to expand the light zone, stretching from the Wannian River to Millennium Park. There are 20 sets of tech-inspired, interactive art installations, combining local landscape features to create five major light zones. The festival was illuminated on February 5 and will run until March 4.

The main visual design of this year’s lantern festival uses twinkling lights to depict the Wannian River, symbolizing the continuous flow of tourists to Pingtung. Starting from Shengli East Road in Millennium Park and following the Wannian River bank to Minsheng Road, the route is divided into five major light zones: “Happy Times,” “Blessings & Healing,” “Sonic Spectrum,” “Charming Pingtung,” and “Tropical Scenery.” These combine lighting, music, and interactive installations to showcase Pingtung’s diverse local culture.

Millennium Park, making its first appearance as a light zone, features seven light installations. These include “Time in the Window House,” crafted from old wooden doors and window frames, depicting the image of military dependents’ villages; “Light Tree Tower,” where visitors can pedal bicycles to generate kinetic energy and produce electricity, offering an eco-friendly green energy experience; and a dog-shaped light installation made from fruit crates called “Fruit Comes Prosperous,” echoing the Year of the Dog.
