Bitan Scenic Area

Bitan is located in the northern part of Xindian City and is a historic tourist destination in the Greater Taipei area. It has also been a sentimental dating spot for many older generations of Taipei residents. The name "Bitan" (Green Pond) comes from the steep, rugged cliffs along its shores, and it is also known as Chibi Tan (Red Cliff Pond). Situated in the middle reaches of the Xindian River, the area features winding peaks and an unusually wide riverside with crystal-clear, calm, and deep waters. It has long been renowned along the Xindian River and was once praised as one of Taiwan’s Twelve Scenic Spots.

The most iconic sight in Bitan is the Bitan Suspension Bridge. Built in 1937, this 200-meter-long bridge resembles a rainbow resting on the water, complementing the emerald-green pond. Standing on the bridge, you can look down at small boats drifting leisurely amidst the landscape or gaze afar at the winding Xindian River, with its beautiful mountain and water views. However, the aging bridge has shown signs of wear, such as broken cables. For safety reasons, the Taipei County Government has actively undertaken restoration efforts to repair the old bridge while preserving its original appearance, ensuring that the shimmering pond and bridge remain a timeless symbol of Bitan.

The National Freeway No. 2 Bitan Bridge is one of the modern wonders of Bitan. This 850-meter-long curved arch bridge features a main span of 160 meters, making it the longest prestressed concrete box girder bridge in Taiwan. It forms a striking contrast with the old Bitan Suspension Bridge, bringing a fresh new look to the area. Additionally, the riverside water-friendly park and log cabin shops add recreational value to the western bank.

At dusk, the pond is enveloped in the glow of the setting sun, creating breathtaking scenery. At night, the area around the pond becomes a lively spot with a cluster of street vendors, forming a quaint little night market. A nighttime stroll around Bitan offers a unique charm. If you have more time, consider staying overnight to fully appreciate the beauty of Bitan at dawn and dusk.

Transportation Guide:

1. From Taipei City’s Park Road, take a Xindian Bus bound for Xindian or Wulai, and get off at Bitan Bridgehead Station. Follow the signs to reach the destination.

2. Take the Taipei Metro Xindian Line and get off at Xindian Station.
