Dahan River

The Dahan River, originally known as the Dakengkeng River, is located in northern Taiwan and is one of the three major tributaries of the Tamsui River. It originates from an area near the northern side of Pintian Mountain at an elevation of about 3,100 meters, with a river length of 135 kilometers and a drainage basin covering 1,163 square kilometers. The basin spans New Taipei City, Taoyuan County, Hsinchu County, and a small part of Yilan County, and eventually joins the Tamsui River at Jiangzicui in Banqiao after converging with the Xindian River.

The Dahan River not only provides abundant irrigation water to the areas it flows through but also boosts tourism development along its banks. Among these, the Shimen Reservoir catchment area in the upper reaches is the most attractive to visitors and has become one of the region's most renowned scenic destinations. The Shimen Reservoir catchment is situated in the southeast of Taoyuan County. After intercepting the midstream waters of the Dahan River, it forms a vast deep pool surrounded by mountains. The reservoir is best known for its stunning lake and mountain scenery, complemented by grand water conservancy projects and charming small-town vistas. Whether it’s boating on the lake, admiring maple leaves, birdwatching, hiking, or simply strolling and relaxing, visitors can fully enjoy the experience. It has long been a top getaway for city dwellers seeking to escape the hustle and bustle.
