Wulai Hot Springs

Wulai Hot Springs is located in Wulai District, New Taipei City in northern Taiwan. The name "Wulai" (urai) is a transliteration from the language of the Atayal, an indigenous Taiwanese group, meaning "smoky hot water." The hot springs are primarily distributed along the western side of the confluence of the Nanshi River and the Tonghou River, and belong to the metamorphic rock hot spring zone of the Snow Mountain mountain range. The nearby cliffs feature observable geological formations such as Siling sandstone, Gangan stratum, Cuku sandstone, Datongshan stratum, and Aodi stratum.

It is believed that the hot springs originate from fractures formed during the development of the Chatianshan anticline nearby, with most springs emerging along the axis of this anticline.

Water Quality

The waters of Wulai Hot Springs are clear and transparent, drinkable, and can reach a maximum temperature of 78°C. With a pH level of 7–8, the water contains approximately 848 ppm of bicarbonate ions and 417 ppm of sodium ions, classifying it as a neutral sodium bicarbonate spring. Also known as "beauty spring," sodium bicarbonate springs are beneficial for skin rejuvenation.

History

Wulai Hot Springs were developed during Taiwan’s Japanese colonial period.

Taipei Metro: Take the Xindian Line of the Taipei Metro to Xindian Station, then transfer to a Xindian Bus to reach Wulai.

Bus: Take a Xindian Bus directly to Wulai Station.
