Cape Bitou

Cape Bitou is a prominent cape situated along Taiwan’s northeastern coast. Located about 10 kilometers west of Ruifang Township (now Ruifang District, New Taipei City) in what was formerly Taipei County, and approximately 10 kilometers south of Sandiao Cape, it earned its name due to its nose-like appearance. As travelers drive along the coastal highway and pass kilometer marker 85 near Nanya, they can catch a distant glimpse of Cape Bitou jutting into the expansive blue ocean. The spectacular, battleship-like sea cliffs leave an indelible impression on every visitor.

Cape Bitou holds significant geographical importance in the maritime region. The area north of the cape belongs to the East China Sea, while the area to the south belongs to the Pacific Ocean. Together with Sandiao Cape — the easternmost point of Taiwan — and Fugui Cape — the northernmost, it forms the “North Taiwan Triangle.” Due to the cape’s protruding orientation, tidal currents create a large whirlpool beneath the Cape Bitou Lighthouse, commonly known as “Swirling Water.” This vortex rotates clockwise, spinning more vigorously during high tide and more gently during low tide, offering a truly magnificent sight. Since the opening of the coastal highway, the fishing villages around Cape Bitou have seen considerable improvement. Many traditional structures have been replaced with reinforced concrete buildings, and vendors and seafood stalls have sprung up like mushrooms, allowing visitors to not only enjoy breathtaking scenery but also experience the rich local charm.
