Nanya Rock Formations are located near New Taipei City in Taiwan, China, situated along the North Coast Highway, and serve as a scenic spot on the Northeast Coast. The coastal rocks here are wildly diverse in shape, making them one of the most iconic features of the Northeast Coast.

The coastal stretch in Nanya features steep cliffs and an exceptionally unique landscape. The most astonishing sight is the scattering of bizarrely shaped, exquisitely crafted weathered rock patterns, resembling an outdoor sculpture museum. The vivid, painterly weathering lines are also among the most beautiful characteristics of Nanya’s rocks. The rock layers in this area of Nanya belong to the Dapu Formation sandstone, which contains many vertical joints. These joints have been eroded and weathered into needle-like or columnar rock peaks. Influenced by the frequent wind and rain from the Northeast Monsoon, the joints in the sandstone are easily eroded by rainwater and subjected to weathering, causing iron-containing minerals within the rocks to oxidize and form banded patterns of iron oxide. Due to varying erosion rates caused by differences in the rock layer joints or hardness, usually the joint surfaces and softer parts of the rock erode more easily, breaking off and gradually creating an uneven surface. Combined with the effects of weathering, the rocks display varying shades of color, resulting in uniquely shaped stones. Some people refer to them as “ice cream rocks.”
