Gongbei Temple

Gongbei Temple is one of the most renowned temples among the cluster of temples in Xizhi. Its exquisitely carved, multi-tiered roof is built along the mountainside, forming a hidden gem nestled among the lush cypress-covered hills. Traveling from Xizhi along the Xiwang Highway toward Hongnei, you’ll soon spot the Gongbei Temple archway. Follow the signs up the asphalt road, or take the shaded stone steps—both routes lead to the temple, with the latter being especially cool and pleasant.

With a history of nearly a hundred years, Gongbei Temple is also commonly known as Xizhi’s Immortal Father Temple. It is situated on Sanshou Mountain and enshrines the deities Fuyou Dijun, Sakyamuni Buddha, and Confucius. During major temple festivals such as Sakyamuni Buddha’s birthday on the 8th day of the 4th lunar month and Fuyou Dijun’s birthday on the 14th day of the 4th lunar month, grand performances of Taiwanese opera are held, drawing lively crowds.

In front of the temple is a spacious platform offering clear views of the scenery below. The temple grounds also feature several small pavilions built along the mountainside, where you can gaze out at the surrounding peaks and enjoy a refreshing sense of openness. A path beneath the pavilions leads to a nearby elm forest—quiet, secluded, and tranquil. On quieter days when there are fewer worshippers, a stroll through the back hills accompanied by the sound of sutra chanting helps clear the mind, leaving one feeling peaceful and serene.

Transportation Guide: Take the Taiwan Railways Administration’s West Coast or North-Link Line to Xizhi Station, or take Taipei City Bus routes 51, 311, or 605, or Fu-Ho Bus (Banqiao–Jiufen Line) to Xizhi. From Xizhi, transfer to the community shuttle bus on the Wuzhishan Line and get off at the Gongbei Temple stop.
