Urumqi Jiulong Ecological Park

Urumqi Jiulong Ecological Park is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

Urumqi Jiulong Ecological Park is located in Shayibake District, Urumqi City, Xinjiang Autonomous Region. It is currently the largest cemetery in China and a modern, new-type cemetery that integrates sightseeing, tourism, leisure, memorial services, and cultural education.

Approved in 2003 by the Civil Affairs Bureau of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, Jiulong Ecological Park was jointly invested in by Xinjiang Ya'an Cemetery Co., Ltd. and the 104th Regiment of the 12th Agricultural Division of the Corps, with a total investment of 320 million yuan. It is situated on Table Mountain in the Western Hills of Urumqi. The park is surrounded by mountains, with a Sleeping Buddha Mountain to the left. The mountain where the park is located resembles the right palm of the Sleeping Buddha, forming a classic “Five Sons Passing the Imperial Examinations under the Buddha’s Palm” landform from south to north—a feng shui treasure said to bring “everlasting geographical fortune and generational prosperity.”

The entire park covers an area of 4,500 mu, with green space accounting for over 76%. The architecture within the park combines the classical elegance of Jiangnan garden design with the grandeur of Western Region style. It features three major themed parks: “Oasis Beyond the Great Wall,” “Silk Road,” and “Loulan Ancient City.” With its beautiful environment and picturesque scenery, the park also uses commercial elements as carriers to integrate the spiritual philosophies of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism, promoting filial piety and carrying forward traditional culture.

As a modern, new-type ecological cemetery that combines tourism, leisure, sightseeing, culture, education, and memorial services, Jiulong Ecological Park operates with the philosophy of “Life Continues Amidst Green Trees and Flowers.” It merges traditional funeral culture with modern concepts, pioneering a new approach to cemetery development in Northwest China and advancing the reform of Urumqi’s funeral industry. It has become a shining jewel in China’s cemetery sector and officially joined the ranks of national AAAA-level scenic spots in June 2008.

On December 5, 2016, the National Tourism Administration held a press conference and issued a warning within the list of 4A-level scenic spot management actions.

Major Attractions

The park features distinctive landscapes such as Lotus Lake, Jiulong Square, Western Region-style Populus euphratica forest scenery, the country’s largest Red Cross body donation memorial park, Wangfo Platform, Ziyun Pavilion, and Qianqiu Pavilion, skillfully blending the architectural styles of Jiangnan with the ethnic minority charm of Xinjiang. Additionally, visitors can see memorial monuments and artistic tomb sculptures dedicated to many notable figures in Xinjiang, including the “King of Western Songs” Wang Luobin and founding Major General Mao Xianshao. Jiulong Square covers an area of 26,000 square meters, making it the largest square in any cemetery in China.
