North Minzu University

North Minzu University is the only ministry-affiliated university in China established in an ethnic autonomous region. It is directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and co-built by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Ministry of Education. The university is located in Yinchuan, the capital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region — known as the “Jiangnan on the Frontier.” It covers an area of 1,624 acres. Its predecessor was the Northwest Second Nationalities College, founded in 1984, and it was renamed North Minzu University in 2008.

The university adheres to the socialist direction of education, fully implements the Scientific Outlook on Development, and integrates the Party’s educational policy with ethnic policies, as well as the general principles of higher education with the characteristics of ethnic higher education. Upholding the overall requirements of being “politically steadfast, exemplary as citizens, professionally competent, and pillars of society,” the university serves the economic and social development of China's ethnic minorities and regions. It is an important base for cultivating outstanding ethnic talents, researching ethnic theories and policies, inheriting and promoting outstanding ethnic cultures, and showcasing China’s ethnic policies and international exchanges.

In recent years, the university has seen accelerated and improved development. In 2000, it successfully passed the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching evaluation. In 2004, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region signed a co-construction agreement. In 2007, it received an “excellent” rating in the Ministry of Education’s undergraduate teaching evaluation. In May 2011, the university was recognized by the Ministry of Education as one of the top 50 universities in national graduate employment promotion, and it has repeatedly won the autonomous region’s honorary title of “Advanced Collective in National Unity and Progress.” With excellent facilities and a refined cultural environment, the university has been honored by the National Greening Commission as one of the “Top 400 National Sector Greening Units” and designated as a “Garden-Style Unit” by the Yinchuan Municipal People’s Government.

In October 2015, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Ministry of Education decided to co-build six ministry-affiliated universities, including North Minzu University, ushering in new opportunities for its development.

Currently, the university enrolls over 20,000 students, including master’s, undergraduate, and preparatory students from all 56 ethnic groups across 31 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in China. Ethnic minority students make up 60% of the student body, making it a microcosm of the big family of the Chinese nation. Over the past 30-plus years, the university has trained more than 40,000 outstanding talents for the economic and social development of ethnic minority areas. These graduates have deep knowledge of ethnic cultural traditions, familiarity with local customs, and are committed to working in ethnic regions. They have become practitioners of “working together for unity and common prosperity,” builders of economic and social development in ethnic minority regions, promoters and disseminators of outstanding ethnic cultures, and defenders of ethnic unity and national unification. They contribute their youth and wisdom to the region’s economic construction, social development, and ethnic harmony, making positive contributions to the cause of ethnic unity and progress.
