On the evening of December 7, 2012, at 7:00 PM, the Year-End Report Meeting of the Mountaineering and Rock Climbing Club at China University of Geosciences (Beijing) was successfully held in Room 101 of the University's Comprehensive Building. The meeting aimed to provide a detailed summary and report on the major activities carried out by the club in 2012 and its overall development.
Guests attending the meeting included Guo Xing, former Vice President of China University of Geosciences; Luo Shen, Head Coach of the Chinese National Mountaineering Team; Yuan Yang, former Captain of the Chinese Women’s Mountaineering Team; Teacher Zhao Yanping, Assistant to the President, Head of the University Armed Forces Department, and Political Commissar of the Military Training Unit; Deng Junwen, Deputy Director of the Physical Education Department at the university and instructor of the club. In addition, the meeting also invited representatives from the media, business partners, and sister clubs.
At the beginning of the meeting, Teacher Deng Junwen delivered a speech on behalf of the club. From his report, we learned that since the club’s revival in 2008, it has developed rapidly and now has over 300 members. Since 2008, the club has successfully summited 14 snow-capped mountains, and on the occasion of the university’s 60th anniversary this year, achieved a joint Everest climb by students from both the Beijing and Wuhan campuses. He pointed out that the club has trained a large number of mountaineers for the country.
Guo Xing spoke to the students about the mountaineering and scientific research tradition of China University of Geosciences
Chen Qing, Vice President of the Mountaineering and Rock Climbing Club at China University of Geosciences and captain of the mountaineering team, gave a summary report on the various activities organized by the club in 2012. First, he introduced the training of mountaineering team members, highlighting the purpose, timing, and specific training programs of the winter training conducted at Wan Neng Ski Resort. In terms of spiritual culture, he also introduced the club’s May Day Mountaineering Culture Festival to the audience. Finally, he summarized the club’s activities over the past year.
Subsequently, representatives of various activities reported and shared their experiences. The reported activities included: a series of activities by the rock climbing team and their national competition achievements, the retracing of the May Day ascent of Mount Haba, the high-altitude scientific expedition to Mount Xixiabangma, the “Hope for Yunnan” teaching support trip to Jianshui, Yunnan, cycling around Qinghai Lake, and the “Heading East” geological resource exploration trip to Heixiazi Island. The reports were presented to the audience in the form of PPT presentations and video screenings. The summit of Mount Haba was mainly showcased through videos to highlight the mountain’s beauty, which stirred great enthusiasm among attendees. Due to the challenging ascent of Mount Xixiabangma, harsh weather conditions, insufficient personnel, and heavy loads for carrying equipment and conducting scientific research, there was a lack of visual material. Therefore, the presentation mainly relied on Guo Cheng, a member of the scientific expedition team, who narrated the climbing process and the difficulties encountered during the scientific research. A total of nine people participated in this scientific expedition, including five members of the mountaineering team from China University of Geosciences (Beijing). The research involved assembling and calibrating a weather station at the 7,000-meter saddle of Mount Xixiabangma, and collecting snow samples every 100 meters of descent on the way down the mountain. Their shovel broke, forcing them to camp on uneven terrain, and they had to remove their gloves to tighten screws under extremely cold high-altitude conditions. Guo Cheng described the various hardships faced during the mountaineering and scientific expedition, which instantly inspired the audience’s fighting spirit and determination to overcome challenges.
Next, a freshman representative from the China University of Geosciences mountaineering team spoke. He talked about his experience joining the club, having gone through periods of confusion and emptiness. However, he felt that the daily training provided by the club made him feel fulfilled. He also expressed his intention to learn more from senior members, live up to the expectations of his predecessors and seniors, and work together to make the club better.
During the guest speech segment, Luo Shen firmly stated: “China University of Geosciences has made great contributions to China’s mountaineering movement.” In addition, he mentioned that when university students go mountaineering, safety should be the top priority, choosing suitable mountains to climb and challenging themselves.
Senior members Guo Xing and Yuan Yang fully affirmed the activity reports of the Mountaineering and Rock Climbing Club at China University of Geosciences, especially praising the report on the “National Day Xixiabangma Mountaineering and Scientific Expedition.” They said that mountaineering combined with scientific research aligns with the university’s tradition: wherever you climb, you must conduct research. They also expressed their joy at seeing successors to this tradition and hoped that the Mountaineering and Rock Climbing Club would continue to carry forward this tradition and spirit.
With this, the report meeting was declared concluded. Many attendees were left wanting more, and the 2012 Year-End Report Meeting of the Mountaineering and Rock Climbing Club at China University of Geosciences (Beijing) came to a successful close.
