Looking back at history, Zhongwei, as a key city in the northwest, has long held strategic importance. During the Mongol Yuan Dynasty, the legendary Genghis Khan defeated the Western Xia army in Zhongwei, laying the foundation for the eventual conquest of the Western Xia. However, heaven did not favor this great figure, as Genghis Khan also passed away in Zhongwei due to illness, a truly poignant moment.
As one of China's Top 100 Cities of Charm, Zhongwei has also been awarded the "Dubai International Award for Best Practices to Improve the Living Environment," two "China Habitat Environment Examples Awards," and has successively received honors such as the "China Habitat Environment Construction Outstanding Contribution Award," "China's Best Green Ecological City," and "2011 City Investment Environment Best City."
Today’s Zhongwei boasts two ace tourism resources: the Yellow River and the Tengger Desert. Through the integration of various tourism resources by the Shapotou Scenic Area, the city has become vibrant. Visitors from all over, including foreigners with blonde hair and blue eyes, bring endless vibrancy to this city with its profound cultural heritage. The three major tourist areas of Zhongwei—Shapotou, Golden Sand Island, and Tonghu Grassland—are also creating countless wonderful memories for visitors.
