Kaohsiung’s Namasia District Features 3 Firefly Trails – Feel Like You’ve Fallen into a Starry River

Fireflies are lighting up various parts of Taiwan, and recently, Kaohsiung’s Namasia District has entered its firefly mating season. Every evening, tens of thousands of fireflies can be seen dancing in the valleys. Some describe walking through the woods as falling into a galaxy – a truly romantic and beautiful sight. The Namasia District Office has also planned three firefly-viewing trails to make it easier for the public to explore. The firefly season, known locally as the “Firefly Auntie Season,” lasts until early May.

The three firefly-viewing trails are located in Nanshalu, Maya, and Dakanuwa. The district office says that fireflies start appearing after sunset, with peak viewing times between 7 and 8 p.m. Among the three routes, Nanshalu and Dakanuwa have higher firefly populations. It is also reported that the Labinia and Maxinghalan trails in the area are home to fireflies, so visitors can check them out as well.

The Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau states that there are about 60 species of fireflies in Taiwan, with over 20 found in Namasia District. Common species include the black-winged firefly, the mountain window firefly, and the large black firefly. When visiting the mountains to see fireflies, visitors are advised not to use flash photography or attempt to catch them. Recently, sections of Provincial Highway 21 damaged by Typhoon Morakot have been gradually repaired, allowing visitors to explore the area with greater peace of mind.
