Renhe Mountain Martyrs' Cemetery

Renhe Mountain Martyrs' Cemetery is a classic red tourism destination, as well as a patriotic education base and national defense education base.

Renhe Mountain Martyrs' Cemetery is situated in Renhe Village, Gucheng Town, about 23 kilometers northwest of Pengyang County, and is the largest cemetery in the region. The Battle of Renhe Mountain was a fierce clash during the Northwest Liberation War, where the first battle for the liberation of Ningxia took place. The cemetery contains the remains of 391 martyrs (233 identified and 158 unidentified), including 364 officers and soldiers from the 64th Army of the 19th Corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army who sacrificed their lives in the Battle of Renhe Mountain, 4 Red Army soldiers from the First Front Army who died during the Long March while passing through Pengyang, 21 revolutionary fighters such as underground CPC members, those who died fighting bandits after liberation, resistance squad members, and revolutionary officials who died in the line of duty, 1 soldier who died during the counterattack in the self-defense war against Vietnam, and 1 martyr whose scattered remains were relocated from Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in 2013. The cemetery covers an area of 40,000 square meters and includes a memorial monument, memorial hall, mourning plaza, martyrs’ tombs, public cemetery, flower beds, sculptures, office buildings, and parking lots. It is a fully funded public institution with two staff members on official payroll. In 1996, it was approved by the State Council as one of the third batch of key protected revolutionary martyrs' memorial buildings nationwide. In 1998, it was designated as a Party building education base by Pengyang County. In 2004, it was recognized as a regional patriotic education base by the Publicity Department of the Autonomous Region Party Committee. In September 2006, it was named one of the first national defense education bases in the region by the National Education Commission and the Publicity Department of the Autonomous Region Party Committee. In 2009, the National Defense Education Office named Renhe Mountain Martyrs' Cemetery as one of the first “National Defense Education Demonstration Bases” in China. In May 2014, it was designated as one of the first historical education and publicity bases in the region by the Regional Party History Research Office. The cemetery has become an important site for cadres, masses, and people from all walks of life in the region to honor the great achievements of revolutionary martyrs and to experience the fearless spirit, courage, and relentless drive of Communists. It continues to inspire the public to strengthen their belief in communism, remain committed to the leadership of the Communist Party of China, and strive with determination and vigor toward realizing the Chinese Dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
