Ziyang Selenium-Rich Tea is a premium beverage produced in the naturally selenium-rich regions of Ziyang County, located in the southern part of Shaanxi Province, China. It offers unique health benefits and is the world’s first high-quality green tea scientifically proven to have special health-promoting properties.
Ziyang tea is a historically renowned tea, served as an annual tribute to the imperial court during the Tang Dynasty, and was ranked among China’s top ten famous teas during the Qing Dynasty. Today, it is the world’s first naturally selenium-rich tea to be scientifically certified, and the only natural selenium-rich tea product in China to receive national geographical indication protection.
Ziyang County is located in the southern part of Shaanxi Province, at the northern foot of the Daba Mountains, within the Han River basin. It is one of China’s ancient northern-edge tea-growing regions. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, researchers from the Shaanxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences discovered that Ziyang tea is rich in selenium, an essential trace element for the human body. Ziyang is one of only two selenium-rich regions in China. Due to the high selenium content in the soil, tea leaves and other plants in the area are also abundant in selenium, which attracted in-depth studies by scholars both in China and abroad. After repeated research and verification, it was concluded that Ziyang tea contains an average of 0.6530 ppm of selenium, with the highest value recorded at 3.8536 ppm [the international standard for selenium content in tea ranges from 0.2–5.00 ppm], placing it among the highest and best levels known globally. Ziyang tea is rich in beneficial components, containing 3.08–5.69% amino acids, 14.15 mg/100g of VE, 58.0 mg/g of zinc (14% higher than the general zinc content in Chinese teas), and 30.35% tea polyphenols; it also has 207.03 mg/g of catechins. On September 6, 1998, a national expert panel composed of representatives from the State Science and Technology Commission, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, the Tea Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the National Institute for Food and Drug Control, the Fourth Military Medical University of the People’s Liberation Army, the Chinese Nutrition Society, the Chinese Tea Society, and the Asia-Pacific Nutrition Society conducted a technical evaluation in Beijing. The research confirmed that Ziyang Selenium-Rich Tea helps combat aging, prevent and fight cancer, resist radiation, and enhance the human immune system. It also combats oxidation, eliminates free radicals, inhibits tumors, and blocks N-nitroso compound formation. It is one of the rare specialty health teas in the world known to promote longevity. According to medical researchers, over forty diseases are related to selenium deficiency, such as Keshan disease and cardiovascular diseases. The development and production of natural Ziyang Selenium-Rich Tea represent a scientific contribution by China’s tea, medical, and nutrition communities toward enhancing human immunity and improving the health of tea drinkers. Experts from the United States, France, Japan, and Taiwan have also conducted research on the anti-cancer and health-promoting effects of Ziyang Selenium-Rich Tea.
Ziyang County boasts beautiful mountains and clear waters, along with a pristine ecological environment—one of the few in China that remains entirely free from pollution. This unpolluted, high-quality ecosystem and natural selenium-rich setting endow Ziyang tea with its uniquely rich selenium content. Ziyang Selenium-Rich Tea is naturally high in selenium, with plump and robust buds and leaves, visible white pekoe, emerald-green color, bright and tender green infusion, rich and lasting chestnut aroma, a strong yet non-astringent taste that is mellow and sweet with a long-lasting aftertaste. It is highly nutritious, supplements selenium for health benefits, and is known for its excellent brewing endurance. The renowned Chinese nutritionist Yu Ruo Mu once praised it: “Ziyang tea, rich in selenium, is anti-cancer, beautiful in color, fragrance, and taste, making it a treasure among teas.” On October 29, 2004, it was designated as a national protected geographical indication product and recognized by the State Administration for Market Regulation as a national selenium-rich tea standardization demonstration zone. Ziyang Selenium-Rich Tea was rated as a provincial quality product in 1987, a provincial local brand product in 1988, and won the silver award at the first China Food Expo in the same year. In 1991, it received the gold award for China's high-quality health products. In 1990, it was awarded the gold award for high-quality health products in Shaanxi Province, followed by the gold award for high-quality health foods in China in 1991, an award for famous tea at the International Tea Culture Festival, the silver award at the China Agricultural Expo in 1992, and the Golden Eagle Award at the National Defense University Tourism Shopping Festival. In 1994, it won the Best Consumer Award for National Products Most Loved by Hundreds of Millions of Chinese People. In 1998, it was named a Shaanxi Provincial Famous Product. In September 2009, at the 7th China International Agricultural Products Trade Fair and the 8th China Changchun International Agriculture & Food Expo (Trade), the “Chunduzao” Ziyang Selenium-Rich Tea recommended by Ziyang County was honored with a gold award.
Ziyang Selenium-Rich Tea is hailed by medical experts as the “King of Anti-Cancer” and the “Star of Anti-Aging,” and is praised by the nutrition community as a healthy product and green health drink for the 21st century.
