Mount Fairy of Pengshan
Formerly known as Mount Fairy, Mount Pengzu stands at an elevation of 610 meters in the northeastern part of Pengshan County, known as the “Land of Longevity.” It is said to be the cultivation site of Pengzu, the legendary 800-year-old Chinese figure of longevity, and his daughter, and is also one of the birthplaces of global longevity and tea cultures. The mountain features the tomb of Pengzu, the progenitor of Chinese qigong and a symbol of longevity, as well as historical sites such as the Temple of Pengzu and Pengzu’s Alchemy Cave. There are also cultural attractions that showcase the three secrets to longevity according to Pengzu: the Hall of Health Preservation, the Qi Gathering Field, and the Pheasant Soup Pavilion. The site also includes the ingeniously designed Twin Buddhas of Pengshan—one sitting and one standing—with the standing Buddha, Sakyamuni, reaching 28 meters in height and the seated Buddha, Prabhutaratna, standing 24 meters tall. Other highlights include the popular religious destination Huiguang Temple and the steep and unique Scenic Overlook of Nine Heavens, among over 20 scenic spots.
“It is not the height of a mountain that matters, but the presence of immortals that brings it to life.” The Mount Fairy Scenic Area not only boasts a rich culture of longevity and wellness, but also numerous historical relics and beautiful landscapes. The terrain here is uniquely dramatic and mysteriously laid out: surrounded by rolling hills, the area features a solitary central peak. The mountain ridges and valleys interconnect from head to tail, undulating continuously like two yin-yang fish embracing each other. The yang fish-shaped mountain rises from low to high, while the yin fish-shaped mountain descends from high to low, echoing the Taoist principle of yang qi rising and yin qi sinking, forming a natural three-dimensional tai chi diagram. The tomb of Pengzu is precisely located at the eye of the yang fish, exuding a strong energy field—a testament to the profound insight of Pengzu, the founding father of Chinese qigong.
The Mount Fairy Scenic Area also includes the ancient Jiangkou Town, home to the earliest “Wuyang Tea House,” the Reading Platform of Li Bai—the setting of the story “grinding an iron rod into a needle,” the Han Cliff Tomb Museum which houses exquisite artifacts unearthed from 5,003 Eastern Han Dynasty cliff tombs in Pengshan and holds significant research value, as well as scenic spots such as General Lake and Mount Fairy Lake, known for their picturesque lakes and mountain views.
