West Terrace

West Terrace of Sanyuan

West Terrace of Sanyuan is a cultural relic protection unit of Nanchong City.

West Terrace is located under Modao Ridge in Group 1, Qiaoding Village, Sanyuan Township, about 65 kilometers north of Yingshan County. After the overhanging rock on the steep cliff collapsed, it formed a round bare rock with a diameter of 80 meters. Facing east and situated to the west, it resembles the moon—like a jade rabbit descending in the west—hence the name "West Terrace."

West Terrace is nestled amidst sheer cliffs. The mountain is lush with emerald cypresses and towering pines, offering a serene environment. On the left side of the terrace's rocky wall is a carved cliff cave, standing 40 meters high and 30 meters wide, housing 1,300 various Buddha statues. Each statue is exquisitely carved, with unique postures and lifelike appearances.

On the right side of West Terrace, a temple was built during the Qing Dynasty on a wide-open flat area. Though the temple has been destroyed, two tall and majestic stone lions, as well as statues of Sakyamuni Buddha and the disciples of Guanyin, remain well-preserved. In November 1994, it was designated as a municipal-level cultural relic protection unit by the Nanchong Municipal People’s Government.
