Sanjiang Dong Ethnic Museum

The Sanjiang Dong Ethnic Museum is a national AAA-level tourist attraction.

The Sanjiang Dong Ethnic Museum is located on Jiangfeng Street, Hexi, Guyi Town, the county seat of Sanjiang. Established in 1992, it was a project created to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the founding of the autonomous county. The museum covers an area of 900 m², with a building area of 1,550 m². The entire structure is arranged from north to south, facing west, with a main three-story building and a central pavilion that has five tiers of double-eaved spire roofs, while the side pavilions have two tiers of double-eaved hip-and-gable roofs. It is an ethnic-style building that incorporates architectural elements of the Dong people’s drum towers and wind-rain bridges, and is the only museum dedicated to the Dong ethnic group in China. The museum houses a visitor reception center and three exhibition halls: the First Exhibition Hall, the Second Exhibition Hall, and the Ethnic Unity and Progress Exhibition Hall. Each exhibition hall displays over 1,000 pieces of ethnic and folk cultural relics from various historical periods in the county since the Eastern Han Dynasty. These relics showcase the splendid civilization of the Dong people from different perspectives, serving as a microcosm of Sanjiang Dong society and a window for visitors to learn about the history, culture, production, and daily customs of the Dong people in Sanjiang.

Since its establishment, the museum has successfully hosted exhibitions such as the Historical Relics Exhibition of the Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County, the Sanjiang Dong Ethnic Culture Exhibition, the Achievements Exhibition of the Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County, and more than a hundred temporary exhibitions in various formats. It has received visits from leaders at all levels as well as guests from countries and regions including the UK, the US, Japan, France, Australia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

In 1997, the museum was designated as a Patriotic Education Base of the Liuzhou Prefecture by the Liuzhou Prefectural Committee and the Prefectural Government. In December 2001, it was named a Third Batch Autonomous Region Patriotic Education Base and Ethnic Unity Education Base by the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Party Committee and the Autonomous Region People’s Government. In 2003, it was designated as a National Key Ethnic Museum by the Ministry of Culture and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage. In December 2004, Sanjiang County was awarded the title of National Advanced County in Cultural Relics Work.
