Duoye Square was first built in 2000, located along Dongxiang Avenue in the county town. It connects to the Sanjiang Drum Tower to the west, faces the Dongxiang Bird’s Nest to the east, borders the Xun River, and stands opposite the old town across the river. The total area covers 3.5 hectares. To meet the needs of local urban development and cultural growth, it was redesigned and renovated in 2010. The surrounding landscape featuring “mountains, water, city, and forests” was integrated into the square, along with traditional Dong architectural elements such as “pavilions, terraces, towers, gazebos, gates, and corridors,” creating a “square of the ethnic group and the living room of Dongxiang.” After the renovation, the square is composed of three spatial levels—upper, middle, and lower—symbolizing the unity of heaven, humanity, and earth. The upper level consists of the drum tower and the pebble totem plaza. The towering Sanjiang Drum Tower signifies the progressive and flourishing spirit of distinctive Sanjiang. The middle level features Dong ethnic folk customs reliefs, a rushing artificial waterfall, and a dynamic musical fountain, symbolizing the wealth and bright future of watery Sanjiang. The lower level includes surrounding wooden pavilions, greenery, unique stones from Sanjiang, and granite slabs. Ethnic characteristics and natural scenery complement each other, with a ground carving of the complete map of Sanjiang County, using the earth as paper to depict the land, symbolizing the vibrant, harmonious, and thriving ecological Sanjiang. Duoye Square is renowned both at home and abroad for its profound Dong culture and convenient urban functions. It serves as the venue for major events such as the China (Liuzhou · Sanjiang) Dong Duoye Festival and the “Sanjiang Spring · Tea Culture Festival.” It is also a primary site for large-scale performances, evening galas, song and dance shows, as well as a popular leisure spot for locals.
