Pingzhai

Pingzhai — Pingzhai is situated on the northern bank of the Linxi River. A ridge stretching toward the river acts as a shield at the village’s southern edge, and another prominent hill divides Pingzhai from Dazhai. The flat terrain between the two hills resembles a dumbbell, with an east-west stream running through it before merging into the Linxi River. Most homes in Pingzhai are located north of this stream, concentrated around the confluence of the stream and the Linxi River. The village economy primarily revolves around the cultivation of glutinous rice, and the mountain forests are rich in resources such as oil tea, tea leaves, Chinese fir, camphor trees, maple trees, and tung trees. The main part of the village lies along the Linxi River, with the area near the northern hillside being the most densely populated. This core residential zone is also where the earliest ancestors of the village first settled.

There are five main pathways within the village, all paved with bluestone slabs, some of which have a history of over a hundred years. Originally, there was a village gate at the exit of each of these five paths. Among them, the southwest gate facing the Linxi River and the southeast gate connecting to the current road are the best-preserved gates among the Chengyang Eight Villages. The streams, ponds, and springs near the villagers’ homes form the water supply system of Pingzhai. The small hill to the north of the village is considered the feng shui mountain of Pingzhai, and beside it stands a towering ancient tree, regarded as the feng shui tree by the villagers, believed to protect the safety of the community. Within Pingzhai, there is an old drum tower built in the first year of the Daoguang reign during the Qing Dynasty (1821 AD), a newly constructed drum tower from 2014, a cultural complex building, as well as a two-span, three-pillar, two-story “Helong” wind and rain bridge over the Linxi River in the southwestern part of the village.

Chengyang Village: The Chengyang Eight Villages are located in Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County, Liuzhou City, Guangxi, approximately 19 kilometers from the county seat of Sanjiang. The Chengyang Eight Villages consist of eight natural hamlets, commonly referred to as the “Chengyang Eight Villages.” They are administered under three administrative village committees and are home to nearly 10,000 Dong people.
