Yan Village

Yan Village — surrounded by mountains on three sides, with the Linxi River to the southeast, the terrain is higher in the north and lower in the south. A small stream from the southwest passes through the mountains, turns northeast at the north of the village, flows through the village and joins the Linxi River. This stream divides the village into eastern and western sections. The triangular area between the two streams east of the creek is the eastern section of the village, which was the original area of Yan Village. Its eastern and western sides were bordered by creeks and rivers serving as moats, while the northern side near the mountain had a former defensive village wall, of which only two gate towers remain. In the eastern section, an old drum tower was built by the Linxi River. The drum tower stands on a steep bank constructed of hard stone slabs, featuring a three-bay hip-and-gable roof structure with eaves on both ends, resembling a temple-style hall. The middle section has an additional double-eave hip-and-gable roof, giving it a three-layered roof appearance. Walking downstream along the river from the drum tower, not far away by the riverside dock there is a "Sa Altar" made of bluestone, with several ancient feng shui trees growing nearby. The mountain peak behind the village is called "Yasa," meaning the Peak of the Sa Altar, and is considered the “feng shui mountain” of the village. There are five ancient flagstone paths in the village, forming the main traffic routes. The streets and alleys are narrow, paved either with flagstones or pebbles, leading to various households. The external streams, internal streams, ponds, and wells in the village form a well-developed water supply system, among which four ancient wells with well pavilions serve as the main drinking water sources for villagers. The village also houses a new drum tower built in 2006 and a center for intangible cultural heritage exhibition.
