Ma'an Village

Ma'an — situated on the left bank of the winding section of the Linxi River. Years of constant river flow and silt accumulation have created a mountain basin. The eastern edge of the basin borders the mountains, and from the base extends a flat area resembling a "saddle," upon which Ma'an Village is built. The village's main agricultural crop is rice, along with plantings such as Chinese fir and tea-oil trees. Viewed from above, the village sits like a peninsula embraced on three sides by winding waters, with surrounding farmland radiating outward and residences clustered in a centralized circular formation.

The drum tower stands on an elevated terrace at the center of the basin, with a flat open space — the drum tower square — in front of it. Residential homes spread out layer by layer downward around the drum tower. There are six looping pathways that form the structural framework of the village. Along the riverbank at the edge of the village runs a stone-paved path encircling the community, intersecting with two entrance roads, which together constitute the main internal traffic routes. In addition to irrigation from the Linxi River, the village also has springs flowing down from the mountains. These springs gather into ponds at the mountain foot, serving purposes such as fish farming and fire prevention. Drinking water for villagers mainly comes from these mountain springs and three stone wells. The village includes one wind-and-rain bridge, two drum towers, three gateways, and four earth god shrines. Beyond the wooden houses of the villagers lie neat, expansive rice fields, beyond which the Linxi River flows through the settlement. Downstream from Ma'an Village, the Chengyang Yongji Bridge — one of the world’s four most famous bridges — spans the Linxi River.

Chengyang Village: Chengyang’s Eight Villages are located in Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County, Liuzhou City, Guangxi, approximately 19 kilometers from the county seat of Sanjiang. The Eight Villages consist of eight natural hamlets, commonly referred to as the “Chengyang Eight Villages,” and are administered under three administrative village committees.
