Ma'an Drum Tower

Ma'an Drum Tower — A four-sided structure with seven tiers of eaves, standing 12.6 meters tall. Originally built during the Jiaqing era of the Qing Dynasty and renovated in 1985. The combination of the even number of sides and the odd number of eaves reflects the Dong people’s primitive religious concept of harmony between yin and yang in architecture. The Bagua symbols of Qian and Kun above the doorframe embody the Dong community’s simple philosophy of pursuing unity between heaven and earth. A cowhide drum is mounted at the center of the tower, signifying that this is a place where drums are beaten to gather the villagers. The roof is adorned with auspicious gourd ornaments, symbolizing the tower’s role in safeguarding the village’s good fortune.
