Sanjiang Wind and Rain Bridge

The Sanjiang Wind and Rain Bridge is located on the Xun River in Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County, Liuzhou, Guangxi. It is a single-arch crescent-shaped reinforced concrete bridge that incorporates the essence of Dong ethnic wooden architectural craftsmanship. With seven bridge pavilions, it boasts the longest length and largest scale in the world, earning the title of the World’s No. 1 Wind and Rain Bridge.

The earliest version of the Sanjiang Wind and Rain Bridge was constructed in 1916. Later, based on the original foundation, it was rebuilt under the direction of renowned Dong carpenter Yang Siyu — a national-level intangible cultural heritage inheritor of Dong wooden architecture construction techniques — along with seven wooden construction teams comprising over 150 workers. In September 2009, the cement structure portion of the bridge, with an investment of over 50 million yuan, was completed and opened to traffic. In March 2010, the wooden construction phase began, using a total of more than 1,800 cubic meters of timber required for the bridge. The Sanjiang Wind and Rain Bridge was fully completed by the end of December 2010.

This multifunctional wind and rain bridge, which embodies the essence of Dong wooden architecture, stands in harmony with the “No. 1 Drum Tower of the Dong Region” — the Sanjiang Drum Tower. Connected via the ethnic-themed tourist commercial pedestrian street — Moon Street — and Dongxiang Avenue, it forms a unified area with the world’s largest single wooden structure, the “Dongxiang Bird’s Nest” Eastern Bullfighting Arena. Together, they create the most iconic golden tourism loop in Sanjiang County and have become the symbol and calling card of Sanjiang.
