Yiyang Olympic Park

Yiyang Olympic Park is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

A national 4A-level scenic area. Located in the downtown area of Yiyang City. The Yiyang Railway Station on the Shichang-Luozhan Railway is 2 kilometers from the park. It is 3 kilometers from the Changsha-Zhangjiajie Expressway, 67 kilometers from downtown Changsha, and only 45–60 minutes from Huanghua International Airport. It is one of Hunan’s “Top 100 Scenic Spots.” It is currently the only sports-themed theme park in China. It serves as the Yiyang training base for the Chinese badminton team. The park features a concentration of cultural landscapes, outstanding sports functionality, beautiful ecological surroundings, and convenient regional amenities.

Yiyang Olympic Park was built in August 2002 by the Yiyang municipal government to host the 9th Hunan Provincial Games in 2002 and the 5th National City Games in 2003, in accordance with the city’s master plan. Covering an area of 500 mu, the park has a rectangular layout, stretching over 700 meters from east to west and about 360 meters from north to south. It is adjacent to the Zishan Lake International Golf Course and the new office complex of the Yiyang Municipal Party Committee and Government, with main urban roads on all four sides—east, west, south, and north—and equipped with entrances and exits. It is a sports-themed park that harmonizes nature with artificial elements and modern architecture with hilly landscapes, and is hailed as the “Light of Silver City.”

The park features multiple gathering plazas, landscape features, lighting and waterscape installations, outdoor fitness equipment, and leisure and recreational facilities. It serves functions such as tourism, leisure, sports and fitness, exhibitions, performances, and sporting events. Since its completion, it has hosted more than ten major sports competitions or large-scale performance events annually. Major national and international sporting events held here include the Chinese FA Cup, the Chinese Super League Women’s Football League, the China League One Men’s Football League, the Bayi Women’s Volleyball Team’s home games during the 2002–2008 National Women’s Volleyball League, the 2005–2007 BWF World Cup Badminton Championships, and the National Women’s Badminton League. In 2004, the Chinese badminton team conducted closed-door pre-Olympic training and simulated matches at the park in preparation for the Athens Olympics.

Main Facilities of the Park

The main facilities of the park consist of “one stadium and three halls,” namely the Comprehensive Gymnasium, the Comprehensive Stadium, the Badminton Training Hall, and the Swimming and Diving Hall:

Comprehensive Stadium (and Hall)

The stadium is built along the mountain terrain, featuring an extraordinary momentum, grand scale, and powerful form. The two stands on the east and west sides are covered by tensile membrane cantilevered rain shelters, which are rugged yet lightweight and graceful, fully reflecting the characteristics of the times, iconic identity, and local uniqueness. The total construction area is 25,109 square meters, with a 12,199-square-meter plastic track and field area and a 7,140-square-meter grass football field, capable of accommodating over 30,000 spectators. The gymnasium has a flying saucer-shaped silver-gray parabolic roof, with a circular plane and structure diameter of 79.2 meters, creating a modern cultural landscape that blends with the park’s natural environment. The building area is 10,300 square meters, and the interior sports floor is made of double-layer specialized wooden flooring, equipped with a central air-conditioning system and a 44-square-meter dual-screen electronic display system. There are 5,000 fixed seats in the stands.

Badminton Training Hall

A four-story building supported by ten front columns, with a construction area of 9,185 square meters, housing 24 badminton courts. It is the training venue for the Yiyang Training Base of the Chinese Badminton Team.

Swimming Hall

The design is simple and sleek, offering expansive views, ample natural lighting, and an indoor swimming hall with a construction area of 9,000 square meters. Inside, there is an eight-lane standard swimming pool. The facility includes field lighting, heating, ventilation, water circulation treatment systems, as well as changing rooms, showers, and disinfection facilities. The outdoor area has an eight-lane standard swimming pool and a diving pool, featuring diving boards and platforms at heights of 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10 meters.
