Most of Guizhou Province is mountainous, with abundant mountain sports resources, but many people living in these areas are impoverished. CPPCC members from Guizhou Province suggest vigorously promoting the development of outdoor mountain sports and boosting tertiary industries such as tourism through sports, making it a new path to help mountain residents escape poverty.
At the Fifth Session of the Tenth Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference currently underway, Qin Zhihao, a member of the Guizhou Provincial CPPCC and deputy director of the Sports Bureau, said that Guizhou is one of the earliest provinces in China to develop mountain outdoor sports and host mountain outdoor sports events. In recent years, various parts of the province have combined their natural mountain resources with advantages in tourism, culture, and climate to develop distinctive mountain outdoor sporting events.

In recent years, various parts of the province have combined their natural mountain resources with advantages in tourism, culture, and climate to develop distinctive mountain outdoor sporting events.
Qin Zhihao gave an example: in late October 2011, the Getu International Rock Climbing Exchange Conference held in Ziyun County, Anshun City, attracted more than 500 rock climbing athletes and enthusiasts from both home and abroad. This climbing event not only brought a lively atmosphere to the area, but also provided the villagers of Getu with considerable income that surpassed their annual earnings. “Vigorously developing outdoor sports activities provides a great opportunity for local economic development, rural construction, and poverty alleviation.”
Qin Zhihao stated that Guizhou Province should put more effort into building characteristic outdoor sports-themed towns, such as those centered on rock climbing and mountain biking. By providing outdoor sports enthusiasts with integrated services for self-guided travel—including food, accommodation, transportation, tours, and shopping—as well as specialized services such as hiking guide services, transportation, rental, and repair of mountain outdoor sports equipment, and emergency rescue for mountain sports incidents, the important role of mountain outdoor sports in “promoting regional development and enriching local people” can be fully realized.
