Hubei University of Chinese Medicine was established in 1958. Its predecessor was the Hubei Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Advanced Training School, founded in 1954. It is the only higher education institution in Hubei Province offering undergraduate programs in traditional Chinese medicine and was rated as an excellent university in the national undergraduate teaching evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education. In 2003, the former Hubei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the former Hubei College of Pharmaceutical Inspection, a specialized college, merged to form a new Hubei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. On March 18, 2010, the Ministry of Education approved the renaming of Hubei College of Traditional Chinese Medicine to Hubei University of Chinese Medicine. Over half a century of practice in higher education in traditional Chinese medicine, Hubei University of Chinese Medicine has built a solid foundation, developed distinctive characteristics, and accumulated rich experience. Rooted in Hubei, serving the nation, and looking to the world, it has formed an educational framework that integrates both traditional Chinese medicine and pharmacology, as well as the humanities, sciences, engineering, and management.

The university was among the first in China to offer undergraduate and graduate programs in traditional Chinese medicine. It is also the first provincial university in Hubei to be granted the authority to confer doctoral degrees in first-level disciplines and one of the first to establish postdoctoral research stations. The university is nationally recognized as one of the first institutions qualified to admit international students and has the authority to enroll undergraduate and graduate students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. The number of students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and abroad ranks among the top in Hubei’s provincial universities.

The university offers a complete range of academic levels, including undergraduate, master's, and doctoral education. It provides a diverse range of program types, such as full-time domestic education, international student education, adult continuing education, and vocational technical education. Currently, the university has 1,212 faculty members, including 859 full-time teachers, among whom 374 are professors or associate professors. There are over 18,000 full-time students enrolled in regular degree programs.

The university currently offers 27 undergraduate majors across seven disciplines: medicine, science, engineering, management, literature, education, and economics. It has been authorized to confer doctoral degrees in two first-level disciplines and 13 second-level disciplines, as well as master's degrees in five first-level disciplines and 23 second-level disciplines. The university has been approved for three Ministry of Education featured programs, one national comprehensive reform pilot project for majors, six provincial strategic emerging (pillar) industry talent training plan projects, three provincial comprehensive reform pilot projects for majors, one national-level quality video open course, one national-level quality resource-sharing course, three provincial-level quality video open courses, two provincial-level quality resource-sharing courses, three provincial-level teaching demonstration centers, one provincial-level virtual simulation experimental center, one provincial-level key experimental teaching demonstration center, and one provincial-level pilot college.
