Temple Introduction

The Holy Spring Ancient Temple is located near the Lijiafang Tunnel in Huangshi City, Hubei Province. It is said that Dongfang Shuo, a renowned scholar of the Western Han Dynasty who traveled extensively to famous mountains and sacred waters, once visited Mount Huangjing. There, he discovered a miraculous spring at the foot of the mountain — when it flowed after a long dry spell, rain would soon follow, and when it flowed during persistent rain, clear weather would ensue. This phenomenon was both mysterious and spiritually responsive, so he reported it to Emperor Wu of Han, who then bestowed the title “Holy Spring” upon the spring. From the Han dynasties through the Jin, Tang, and Song periods, and into the Yuan Dynasty, a Taoist master named Li Miaohua attained enlightenment, gathered over 4,800 disciples, and was honored by imperial decree as the “Immortal Master of Myriad Dharma.” Through the efforts of generations of Taoist and Buddhist patriarchs, eminent monks, notable figures, and local patrons who promoted Buddhist and Taoist teachings, the Holy Spring Ancient Temple has endured over two thousand years of trials and tribulations, standing majestically on the land of Jingchu.

Temple Layout

The Holy Spring Ancient Temple sits against Mount Huangjing and faces Daye Lake, bathed in bright sunlight and blessed with the radiance of Buddha, enjoying flourishing incense offerings. Devotees and notable individuals visit throughout all seasons to worship. The “Eight Scenic Spots of the Holy Spring,” inspired by the enlightenment of the Buddha, have brought renown to the temple across China for its spiritual manifestations.

Now, with strong recommendations from relevant authorities and enthusiastic support from all sides, the Holy Spring Ancient Temple has been renovated, with Buddha statues gilded and restored. New facilities have been built, including a chanting hall, an intensive meditation and chanting retreat hall, a Pratyutpanna Samadhi chanting hall, a Pure Land hall, a memorial niche hall (crypt), a scripture lecture hall, a dining hall, living quarters, and a “Disciple Rules” classroom. The ancient temple will become a Buddhist elderly care center, a home for lay practitioners, and a gateway to the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha. It serves as an ideal place for Buddhist devotees to reside, study Buddhism, worship, chant, meditate, retire peacefully, and seek rebirth in the Western Pure Land.
