Tomb of Wang Bowen

The Tomb of Wang Bowen is a cultural relic protection unit of Zhengzhou City.

The original tomb mound covered an area of 6,000 square meters and is now a flat ground. In front of the tomb stand two stone steles from the Song Dynasty: one was erected by Wang Chou, son of Wang Bowen. The stele is 1.98 meters high and 0.64 meters wide. The inscription reads: “Tomb of Wang Bowen, literary name Zhongming, of the Great Song, Vice Minister of War, Director of the Ministry of Revenue, Dragon Pavilion Attendant Official, Privy Councilor”; the other was erected by Qi Xun and six other Jinshi (successful imperial examination candidates) who were sons of Wang Tian. The inscription reads: “Tomb of Wang Tian, literary name Jieran, of the Great Song, Retired Prefectural Governor, Former Assistant Minister, Honored with the Purple Gold Fish Pouch, Courtesy name Tian.”

Wang Bowen, literary name Zhongming, was a native of Jiyin in Caozhou Prefecture. As a child, he excelled in literature and passed the imperial examination with four palindrome poems, earning him the nickname “Wang the Palindrome.” During the reign of Emperor Zhenzong, he served as an official in Bozhou and Huai Prefecture, later rising to Censorate Investigator and Transport Commissioner of Zizhou Road. In the Tianxi era, he held positions such as Vice Minister of the Ministry of War, Director of the Ministry of Revenue, Attendant Official of the Dragon Pavilion, and Privy Councilor. He had two sons: his eldest son, Wang Tian, passed the imperial examination during the Tianxi era and rose to the position of Vice Privy Councilor; his second son, Wang Chou, literary name Jingyi, inherited his father’s official position as a clerk in the Directorate of Construction, and was later promoted to Academician of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices and Hanlin Academician.
