Emei Mountain Wenchang Pavilion

Wenchang Pavilion is located on the eastern side of Wenbi Peak. According to the Yan Mountain Town Annals, “Wenchang Pavilion is situated on the summit of Wenbi Mountain in the southeast of the town. It is a two-story structure spanning three bays, towering above the peak. It is most fittingly flanked by the two-story Kuixing Tower on the left, which is round at the base and pointed at the top, and the two-story Zhangxian Tower on the right, positioned opposite the Kuixing Tower. In the eighth year of the Kangxi reign (1669 AD), the main gate and surrounding walls were constructed.” By this time, a preliminary architectural complex had taken shape at the foot of Wenbi Peak.

According to Zhao Zhishen’s Record of the Renovation of Emei Wenchang Palace, during the early Qing Dynasty, the Zhao family led the first major renovation of Wenchang Pavilion, during which they “added a bell tower on the right, relocated a small hall to the left for the rest of visitors, and later built several rooms to shelter those tending the incense from wind and rain.” Zhao Zhishen also authored an essay titled A Brief Introduction to the Renovation of Wenbi Peak, both texts of which can be found in his Collected Works of Yishan. Wenbi Peak, Wenchang Pavilion, and Kuixing Tower are products of the feudal imperial examination system and represent the cultural heritage of old Boshan.
