Yuan Mountain Stone Sea

The Stone Sea is made up of thousands of massive rocks, each with vivid and lively shapes—some resembling a camel on a long journey, others like an ox plowing the fields, and still others as if a giant turtle cruising through the waves. It is a typical karst landform. About 250 million years ago, this area was a vast ocean, and the many thick layers of limestone deposited on the seabed were later thrust above ground due to prolonged tectonic movements and crustal changes. Around 2 million years ago, dissolution of the limestone and erosion by wind and rain formed the Stone Sea.

The saying “In the south there is Stone Forest, in the north there is Stone Sea” refers to this very place. These towering stones are stacked layer upon layer in a striking arrangement. From a distance, they resemble roaring waves surging in from a vast ocean. Each rock in the Stone Sea carries a history of over a hundred million years. Through the carving of time, they have evolved into a serene yet dynamic three-dimensional masterpiece—majestic and utterly natural.
