Beibianqiao Site

The Beibianqiao Site is a cultural relic protection unit of Hebei Province.

The Beibianqiao Site, located in Beibianqiao Village of the Baicaopan Scenic Area in Yesanpo, Laishui County, was discovered by villagers digging a cellar.

In August 1988, the Department of Archaeology at Peking University and the Baoding Regional Cultural Relics Management Office carried out a clearance. Before the excavation, most of the skull had been smashed; afterward, everything below the calcaneus was missing, but the rest remained largely intact. The restoration and replication work, under the guidance of Professor Lü Zun’e, a paleoanthropologist at Peking University, and Professor Huang Yunping, an archaeozoologist, took over two years. It was named “Laishui Man” and dates back 28,000 years.

On July 15, 1993, the Beibianqiao Site was designated as a provincial-level cultural relics protection unit by the People’s Government of Hebei Province.
