The Four Crossings of the Chishui River Memorial Hall

The Four Crossings of the Chishui River is one of Mao Zedong’s most celebrated military maneuvers.

The Four Crossings of the Chishui River Memorial Hall is located in Tucheng Town, Xishui County, Zunyi City, Guizhou Province, at the site where the Red Army first crossed the Chishui River. The main battleground of the Four Crossings was in Xishui, with the first, second, and fourth crossings all taking place within Xishui County. The Red Army operated in Xishui for 62 days, making it the county where the Central Red Army spent the longest time during the Long March. On January 29, 1935, the Red Army voluntarily withdrew from battle and crossed the Chishui River westward from Tucheng and Yuanhou, marking the beginning of the “Four Crossings of the Chishui River.” Over the next three months, the Red Army crossed the Chishui River three more times along a 100-li stretch from Tucheng to Maotai, maneuvering between enemy forces and galloping across the vast border areas of Sichuan, Yunnan, and Guizhou. Eventually, they broke through the encirclement and pursuit of 400,000 enemy troops, achieving a strategically decisive victory in their relocation.

The Four Crossings of the Chishui River Memorial Hall, with its name inscribed by Comrade Zhang Zhen, former Vice Chairman, is housed in the former site of the Red Army’s Third Corps Headquarters. This site is a two-story building with a blend of Chinese and Western architectural styles. The exhibition hall covers an area of 620 square meters and is divided into two sections: the main war history exhibition and supplementary displays. The war history exhibition vividly recreates the glorious history of the Red Army, under the leadership of Mao Zedong and others, after the Zunyi Conference in January 1935. It details how the Red Army crossed the Chishui River four times and finally crossed the Jinsha River on May 9, achieving a great strategic victory. The exhibition is divided into five chapters: the Tucheng Campaign and Prelude to the Four Crossings, the First Crossing of the Chishui River and Reorganization in Zhaxi, the Second Crossing of the Chishui River and Recapture of Zunyi, the Third Crossing of the Chishui River and Diversion Tactics, and the Fourth Crossing of the Chishui River and the Decisive Victory. These highlight the “miraculous” and “ingenious” aspects of the Four Crossings. Supplementary displays include a special calligraphy and painting exhibition titled “The Spirit of the Four Crossings of the Chishui River, Shining in the Revolutionary Base Areas,” as well as restored living quarters of Comrades Peng Dehuai and [name missing]. The museum houses over 300 Red Army artifacts. Next to the memorial hall, there is a pair of ginkgo trees planted by the Red Army. Every autumn, the female tree bears abundant fruit, emitting a unique and refreshing fragrance.

The Four Crossings of the Chishui River Memorial Hall is situated on the premium route “Guiyang–Zunyi–Renhuai–Xishui–Chishui–Luzhou,” located in the heart of the Sichuan-Guizhou-Chongqing tourism “golden triangle.” Nearby attractions include China Danxia Valley in Xishui, the Guizhou Chishui National Scenic Area, Chongqing Simian Mountain, and the Huangjing Old Forest National Forest Park in Sichuan. Key surrounding sites include the Hunxikou Crossing of the First Chishui River Crossing, the Qinggangpo Battle Site, the Red-Tinted Ancient Town of Tucheng, and the Xiaoba Ecological Scenic Area.
