Chen Gongdi (referred to in historical records as the “Beiyeh Long Dike”)

The dike lies east of the old course of the Yellow River—the Dasaha River. It stands 4–5 meters high, with a flat top 6–8 meters wide, and runs in a north-south direction across the entire territory of Wu Cheng County. It starts five li east of Dezhou, enters Wu Cheng at a point three li east of Sinvsi Village, then continues southward and exits west of Xiaoxingwangzhuang Village in Wucheng Town before entering Xiajin County. Historical records state that about thirty li west of the county (referring to En County), during the Song Dynasty, Chen Yaozuo, while serving as prefect of Huazhou, built this dike to block the Yellow River, hence its name, Chen Gongdi.

Viewed from afar, it rises abruptly over Beiyeh, winding north to south with a majestic arc like a rainbow—truly a spectacular sight and regarded as a historical monument. It is listed as one of the “Ten Scenic Spots of En County.” Today, after more than nine hundred years of wind and rain, the local people of Wu Cheng, who have greatly benefited from the dike, named it “Chen Gongdi” in memory and recognition of Chen Yaozuo’s enduring legacy. They have also composed poems and odes to praise his achievements. An old record includes a regulated verse titled “Beiyeh Long Dike,” which reads: “To tame the Yellow River, once they feared emptying Beizhou; / This vast dike arcs like a rainbow across the wilds. / Ancient canals still trace Yu the Great’s divine feats; / This mighty barrier echoes the Song sage’s valor. / West Lake’s tales of Su and Bai live on in fame; / Eastward Ping’en preserves its fiefdom’s old grace. / Joyful fields and homes stand safe and unharmed— / To this day, people still extol Lord Chen’s grace.”

Wucheng Town: Located in the seat of Wu Cheng County, Wucheng Town enjoys well-developed transportation and communication networks and complete infrastructure. It lies less than 15 kilometers south of the Qingdao-Yinchuan Expressway, east of National Highway 105, and is traversed by De-Shang Road, Zheng-Hao Road, and Lin-Wu Road, making it highly accessible. The town administers 81 administrative villages, covers a total area of 150 square kilometers, has a population of 56,000, and cultivates 125,000 mu of arable land. In 2005, the town’s gross domestic product reached 596 million yuan, fiscal revenue totaled 13 million yuan, and the per capita income of farmers was 3,340 yuan.
