Yaoshan Park

Yaoshan Mountain, located in the northwest of Jinan city, borders the surging Yellow River to the north, faces Beimasan Mountain to the south, connects to the urban area to the east, and stretches out to flat fertile fields to the west. With an elevation of 125 meters, Yaoshan is composed of gabbro. When viewed from the southern bank of the Yellow River, its nine peaks of varying sizes resemble lotus flowers in different shapes, hence the name "Nine-Peak Lotus Mountain." It is one of Jinan’s “Seven Scenic Spots in the Hazy Distance.”

Yaoshan Mountain got its name from a type of stone with high medicinal value. The "Qi Cheng" records: "Yaoshan produces yangqishi, which is of excellent quality." In addition, the mountain is rich in various medicinal herbs such as pinellia, polygala, chrysanthemum, Artemisia capillaris, bupleurum, and rehmannia. Ancient texts state that Yaoshan was once a herb-gathering site for Bian Que, the ancient master of medicine in China. With a long history, Yaoshan boasts abundant natural and cultural landscapes.

Before the 1930s, in addition to its abundant medicinal resources, Yaoshan was covered with tall cypress trees, lush greenery, and continuous springs. Every year on the third day of the third lunar month, a large mountain fair (temple fair) was held on the mountain. People from as far away as Henan and Anhui, and as nearby as Weifang and Linyi, would come to join the festivities. The Yaoshan March 3rd Temple Fair, along with the Qianfo Mountain September 9th Temple Fair, were two of Jinan’s major mountain fairs and popular destinations for locals to hike and enjoy spring outings.
