Former Site of the Jiaoji Railway Station

The former site of the Jiaoji Railway Station is a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The former site of the Jiaoji Railway Station is located on the east side of Chezhan Street in Tianqiao District, Jinan City, Shandong Province. It is a European-style building. The station building commenced construction in 1914 and was completed and put into use in 1915.

In 1898, Germany forced the Qing government to sign the "Jiaozhou Bay Lease Treaty," which allowed Germany to construct two railways in Shandong — one from Qingdao via Weixian and Boshan, and another from Yizhou and Laiwu to Jinan. In 1904, the Jiaoji Railway was laid from east to west to Jinan, and shortly afterward, the Tianjin–Pukou Railway, funded by loans from Britain and Germany, also reached Jinan. Due to differing jurisdictions, the two sizable stations were built independently just hundreds of meters apart, both in European style. Before the 1930s, both railway stations were in simultaneous use. It was not until the end of 1937, when Japanese forces invading China occupied Jinan, that the two stations were modified and expanded for zoned management purposes. The following year, the Jiaoji Railway Jinan Station was incorporated into the Tianjin–Pukou Railway Jinan Station. In 1939, the two railways were connected, and the Jiaoji Railway Jinan Station was converted into the office of the Jinan Railway Bureau, with the front area serving as a parking lot. It later functioned as the Jinan Railway Sub-bureau, and is now the Jinan Railway Office. In December 1995, it was listed as a Jinan Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit, and in December 2006, it was included in the Shandong Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit list.
