Area Introduction
The 2,500-year-old Qi Great Wall, also known as the Great Wall Ridge or Daheng Ridge, was built by the State of Qi to defend against military invasions from the States of Lu, Chu, and other Central Plains states. It also served as the boundary between Qi and Lu. As stated in the "Guanzi": "To the south of the Great Wall is Lu; to the north is Qi." The Qi Great Wall begins here and extends eastward through Shuangquan, Mashan, Wandei, Licheng, Tai'an, Zibo, all the way to Dongyujiahe Village in Jimo District, Qingdao City, on the northeastern seashore. It spans 18 counties, cities (districts), crosses 1,518 mountain peaks, and has a total length of 1,237.8 li (approximately 618.9 km), historically referred to as the "Thousand-Li Great Wall." It predates the Qin Great Wall by more than 400 years, earning it the title of the "Father of China’s Great Walls" and representing one of the most magnificent examples of ancient Chinese architecture. The story of Meng Jiangnu weeping at the Great Wall is widely known; this is the very place where that tragedy unfolded. Changqing District’s Wandecheng Village in Wandeg Town is said to be Meng Jiangnu’s hometown, and the ruins of the Meng Jiang Temple still remain there. According to legend, Meng Jiangnu’s husband was conscripted to build the Great Wall just three days after their wedding. A month later, she rode to search for him and arrived at the Qi Great Wall. After dismounting at Paoma Ridge, she asked around about her husband and encountered someone from her village who told her that he had died of exhaustion while building the wall at the West Gate. His body was buried beneath the Great Wall. Hearing this, Meng Jiangnu cried bitterly and rushed to the West Gate. She was strong (as evidenced by the footprints left where she dismounted), and when the guards tried to stop her, she wept and clawed at the wall until part of the Qi Great Wall collapsed—and the remnants remain to this day. Fengyun Temple was first established during the Han Dynasty and is a historic Taoist temple with a rich cultural background. Located in the central part of Dafeng Mountain, it is the largest Taoist temple in Jinan. With its red walls and green tiles, majestic presence, and surroundings of lush mountains and murmuring springs, it has enjoyed flourishing incense offerings and throngs of visitors since the Ming Dynasty. Historical records note that in the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, a Taoist priest named Fan Zhenfeng traveled here and noticed frequent auspicious lights and mists emerging from the mountain, deeming it an ideal site for spiritual practice. He thus recruited disciples and raised funds to expand this sacred retreat. The temple's architecture is exquisitely arranged, with upturned eaves, carved beams, and painted rafters, all set within a tranquil environment filled with birdsong and cicada chirps. Fengyun Temple preserves imperial stelae engraved with dragons—four dragons encircling the top with the dazzling "Great Ming" inscription attributed to Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, and four dragons playing with a pearl in flight, inscribed by Emperor Yongzheng. Other highlights include a thousand-year-old locust tree, black sandalwood, and century-old cypresses reaching toward the sky. Major attractions include nearly 20 sites such as Yun Gen (Cloud Root), Yue Kuo (Moon Cave), Hui Yue Lou (Moon-Returning Tower), Qing Long Tan (Azure Dragon Pool), Dai Yue Quan (Moon-Awaiting Spring), Guan Di Miao (Guan Yu Temple), Yu Huang Dian (Jade Emperor Hall), Tai Shan Xing Gong (Tai Shan Travel Palace), Shen Hui Yuan Tong (Divine Wisdom Circle), and Zuo Hua Shen Zhai (Seat of Transcendence), among others. The statues enshrined in the halls are vividly crafted, each with unique and lifelike expressions, and each site is accompanied by a beautiful myth or legend.
