Introduction

The JingTai Stone Archway is located in Jingtai Village, Shinbi Town. It was built in the late Ming Dynasty and renovated in the 22nd year of the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty (1817). This four-pillar, three-bay, three-story stone archway faces south and is made of granite. The top of the gate archway features an ornamental finial, roof ridges, and tilework. The archway is 6 meters high and 2.46 meters wide. The entire upper structure is supported by bracket sets below. Both sides of the archway have white marble plaques. The front plaque is inscribed with “Ji Shao Zhong Lei,” which praises Liu Xiang, an ancestor of the Liu family. Liu Xiang was an economist, bibliographer, and literary figure of the Western Han Dynasty. He was imprisoned twice for state affairs and removed from office, eventually rising to the rank of Commandant of the Central Vanguard (equivalent to the first-rank official position). The inscription means that the immeasurable merits of the ancestors are to be forever inherited and promoted. The back plaque reads “Yin Chui Qiao Mu,” reflecting reverence for ancestors. It symbolizes the ancestors as a grand tree, and their descendants as numerous smaller trees. The people of Jingtai have thrived and developed generation after generation under the protection of their forebears.
