Introduction:

The Yu Family Ancestral Hall is situated in Xujiatang, downtown Anyi County, Jiangxi Province. It was first built during the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty and later reconstructed in the Daoguang reign of the Qing Dynasty. Facing south, it covers a total construction area of 560.7 square meters, with the main building being 17.3 meters wide and 25.8 meters deep. The entrance gate is designed in a traditional “eight-character” shape. The structure consists of a front and a rear section, both with flush gable roofs, connected on the east and west sides by sloped-roof side rooms, forming an integrated complex. Inside the ancestral hall are a front hall, rear hall, side rooms, and passageways, with corridors surrounding the central courtyard. The design employs the methods of column reduction and column relocation, resulting in lofty and spacious interiors. There are a total of 72 large columns, including 12 square bluestone pillars—two at the main entrance and ten around the courtyard. The wooden framework uses a post-and-lintel system with vertical posts mounted on the beams. The walls are made of blue bricks and feature both flat and angled brickwork in a hollowed-out pattern. The roof is covered with clay tiles. The roofing surfaces of the front and rear sections as well as the connecting side rooms are joined by drainage channels, directing rainwater into the courtyard and then out through the drainage system. The ancestral hall retains a strong sense of antiquity, with an elegant and rustic charm, offering significant historical and scientific value. It serves as an important reference for studying the origins and architectural styles of ancestral halls in our county.
