Ruins of Sun Lu’s City from the Three Kingdoms Period

The Ruins of Sun Lu’s City from the Three Kingdoms Period is a cultural heritage site protected at the Jiangxi Provincial level.

The Sun Lu Cultural Ruins site was the royal city of Sun Lu, son of Sun Quan. It is located on the northern side of Xv Natural Village on Phoenix Mountain, 4 kilometers east of Anyi County, Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. Sun Lu City was built in the seventh year of the Huangwu era (228 AD) during the Eastern Wu period of the Three Kingdoms, constructed by Sun Lu, the second son of Wu King Sun Quan and the Marquis of Jianchang.

The city covered an area of 50 mu, with walls two zhang high and over one zhang wide, built from rammed earth. It had four gates facing east, west, south, and north. The eastern gate featured a large stone pavilion, the western gate had the White Horse Hall, the southern gate included a stone well, and the northern gate had a pond. Outside the northern gate stood an earthen mound called “Wooden Fish Mound,” said to have been a sentry post for the city’s defenders. The southern gate’s stone well never dried up in winter or summer. Later, it was renovated and rebuilt into an octagonal shape using red stones, and came to be known as the Octagonal Red Stone Well.

The Sun Lu City ruins were discovered during a cultural relics survey in 1982, became one of the first batch of key cultural heritage sites protected by Nanchang City in 1985, and were designated as part of the third batch of Jiangxi Provincial Key Cultural Relics Protection Units in 1987.
