The Yu Family Ancestral Hall in Wangkou is located 30 kilometers northeast of Wuyuan County and covers an area of over a thousand square meters. The architecture follows the mid-Qing Dynasty central-axis hip-and-gable style. Nearly all wooden components inside the ancestral hall are exquisitely carved, featuring over a hundred sets of various sizes and patterns. The carving techniques include shallow relief, deep relief, openwork, and round carving—delicate, refined, and masterfully executed, with a unique style. It has been hailed by ancient architecture experts as an “art treasury.”

The current ancestral hall is a mid-Qing Dynasty structure of the Yu Family Ancestral Hall. It faces southeast, with a three-courtyard layout spanning 42.6 meters in depth. The front and rear sections each have five bays, featuring courtyards and small round gates, while the middle section has three bays. All are covered with wooden coffered ceilings or flat caisson ceilings. The floor is paved with bluestone slabs. Two hanging pillars supporting the corridor are carved at the top with facing male and female lions. The beams, brackets, ridge ornaments, eaves brackets, spandrels, and dougong brackets are adorned with over a hundred sets of exquisite carvings depicting figures in operatic scenes, landscapes, flowers, birds, and beasts, earning it the titles “treasury of wood carvings” and “palace of art.” The hall’s side gardens contain century-old osmanthus trees and other ancient plants.

In 2006, the Wuyuan Ancestral Halls, as Qing Dynasty architecture, were included in the sixth batch of National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units by the State Council.
