Recently, Wuyuan County has invested over 2 million yuan in the emergency maintenance of an ancient Ming Dynasty opera stage — the Yangchun Ancient Stage — bringing this historic performing arts structure back to life with the sound of opera and a renewed youthful vibrancy.
The Yangchun Ancient Stage is situated in Yangchun Village, Zhentou Town, Wuyuan County, and functions as the gate tower of the Fang Family Ancestral Hall. Constructed in the 41st year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty (1562 AD), it has a history of over 400 years. The entire stage features wooden pillars and bases, reflecting the architectural characteristics of the Ming Dynasty. The stage is 7 meters deep, 12.4 meters wide, and 1.7 meters high. It includes two small stages, front and back, covering a total area of about 50 square meters.
Wuyuan has a long-standing tradition of opera performance and appreciation, and thus the county once had numerous opera stages. However, according to local sources, the Yangchun Ancient Stage is currently the only one remaining in Wuyuan County. Due to years of neglect, the ancient stage had long lost its former splendor, suffering from problems such as leaking roofs, tilted pillars, and damaged performance areas. These issues continuously plagued the stage, which was designated as a national cultural heritage site in 2006.
To restore vitality to this “national heritage” site, Wuyuan County has invested over 2 million yuan for protective repairs on the roof, exterior walls, beams, rafters, internal partitions, and stage surface. The project is now nearing completion and is expected to be finished before the Spring Festival.
