Jiangxi’s Wuyuan green tea has historically been exported to Europe and America. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it continued to be China’s “face tea” in the global green tea market. However, in the early 1990s, as green tea exports declined, Wuyuan tea withdrew from the international market. But in recent years, “Dahuzhang Mountain Tea” has risen rapidly, thanks to its full utilization of the region’s ecological resource advantages and its timely understanding and alignment with the growing global and domestic demand for organic, green, and pollution-free food products. The rise and fall of Wuyuan’s tea industry reflects the profound importance of shifting consumer perceptions and production methods in industrial development.

Wuyuan County in Jiangxi is a jewel in China’s Golden Triangle of green tea production, and “Dahuzhang Mountain Tea” is a gem among Wuyuan’s green teas.

Dahuzhang Mountain is located in the northern part of Wuyuan County, with an elevation of 1,630 meters and spanning 2,100 square kilometers. Here, peaks rise and fall amid year-round clouds and mist, creating a naturally pristine ecological environment. The area’s unique climate and soil conditions have given rise to the exceptional “Wuyuan green tea”—Dahuzhang Mountain Tea. In 1996, after three years of environmental monitoring by the China Green Food Development Center, Dahuzhang Mountain Tea was awarded an A-grade Green Food certificate. It then entered the EU market. Within just a few years of development, Dahuzhang Mountain Tea accounted for over 50% of the national organic food production in terms of planting area, yield, export volume, and foreign exchange earnings, miraculously taking the leading position in the industry. The tea has successively won titles such as Jiangxi Famous Brand, National-Level New Product, China Food Industry Famous Brand, Shanghai Top Ten Tea Brands, Gold Award at the 1999 World Expo, and Jiangxi Well-Known Trademark.

The certified origin area of Dahuzhang Mountain Tea covers the Dahuzhang Mountain range in Wuyuan and nearly 2,100 square kilometers of high-altitude tea-growing regions nearby. This area boasts a superior ecological environment and is part of the golden triangle of Wuyuan’s tea production.

Dahuzhang Mountain is situated in the northern part of Wuyuan County, with an elevation of 1,630 meters. Here, peaks rise and fall amid year-round clouds and mist, creating a naturally pristine ecological environment. An ancient poem describes it: “Stretching 300 li through Huizhou, it divides the sources of Wu and Chu.” The area features undulating mountain ranges, majestic terrain, persistent cloud cover, mild and diffused sunlight, lush vegetation, and fertile soil—an inherently pure and natural environment that has long been known as a blessed land for producing fine tea. The Classic of Mountains and Seas refers to it as the “Land of the Three Heavenly Lords.” Such superior ecological conditions endow the local tea with qualities of “strong aroma, emerald liquor, rich flavor, and thick body.” The area’s unique climate and soil produce the finest quality “Wuyuan green tea”—Dahuzhang Mountain Tea. In national organic food production, Dahuzhang Mountain Tea accounts for over 50% of planting area, yield, export volume, and foreign exchange earnings, miraculously taking the leading position in the industry.

In the golden autumn of October 1997, at a China Green Food promotion event held in Guangzhou, the Dahuzhang Mountain Tea booth caught the amazed attention of many foreign merchants. Soon after, Weber Company invited experts from the EU organic food certification body BCS to visit Wuyuan specifically to inspect the growing environment and processing management of Dahuzhang Mountain Tea. Amid unanimous approval from the international experts, Dahuzhang Mountain Tea successfully obtained the BCS certification. This is a certification recognized in over 140 countries. With this certificate, Dahuzhang Mountain Tea gained a passport to the world.
