Description:

Originally a small water town, a small river runs through the village, with vast rapeseed flower fields in front and Huizhou-style residential buildings at the back. The combination creates a very picturesque scene. Nowadays, the entire village is enclosed as a tourist attraction and operates on a ticket system. In spring, the first half of the fields are covered with blooming rapeseed flowers, along with arched bridges, wooden trestle pavilions, temples, and courtyards. As you enter the latter part of the village, shops line the streets, mainly selling locally produced Huizhou wood carvings and Longwei inkstones, as well as numerous “farmhouse stays” where you can dine and lodge. Among the residences are many well-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty houses with exquisitely carved interiors. Along the river are numerous teahouses and restaurants. Sitting by the water, facing a scene of small bridges over flowing streams, black tiles and white walls, one can feel quite at ease. A river winds through the village in sections. You can take a long bamboo raft to leisurely tour the area. The village has bluestone-paved paths that shimmer with a faint glow. Strolling under an umbrella, you can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere all around, feeling as if you’ve entered another world.

Likeng is located 12 kilometers east of the county seat and is a premium scenic spot on Wuyuan’s eastern route, known for its picturesque small bridges, flowing streams, and rustic homes. After parking at the entrance of the scenic area, vendors immediately approach to sell tickets. In the end, the original 210-yuan package deal was settled at 185 yuan, saving the four of us the cost of a lunch. Upon entering the scenic area, Likeng’s iconic archway stands before you. Beyond the archway lies a vast field of rapeseed flowers. Under the soft morning light at 8 a.m., two “shooting wife” photography enthusiasts are busy at work.

Likeng belongs to Qiukou Town, Wuyuan, and was established during the Northern Song Dynasty. It has a history of nearly a thousand years, with villagers mostly surnamed Li. The village is surrounded by mountains, and its ancient architecture is well preserved with a uniquely charming layout. Two mountain streams outside the village converge into a single river that runs through the settlement. Huizhou-style houses line both banks of the stream, which is spanned by distinctive stone arch bridges and wooden bridges. The river water is crystal clear, and stone platforms by the riverbank are used for washing vegetables and clothes. The mountain scenery and the ancient houses blend seamlessly, creating a vivid and peaceful scene of “small bridges, flowing streams, and rustic homes.”
