Qingyuan Village, a village name, is located 66 kilometers northeast of Wuyuan County. Established during the Guangde era of the Tang Dynasty, the village preserves over a hundred residences from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its walls are built with blue bricks in the “three-six-nine” specification, leading to the saying, “Even if the house collapses, the bricks remain — an inheritance forever.” The layout of the village base resembles a double-hulled boat, stretching 1 kilometer in length. Sixteen stone slab bridges connect the two sides. Village streets and alleys are all paved with stones, and every 40–50 steps there are symmetrical double steps leading down to the stream. Outside the village, there are three Ming Dynasty arched bridges, one of which has a Shegong Temple built on it, with two levels of varying height. At the water outlet, several oddly shaped rocks, two or three times the size of a person, stand out. Beside them are two ancient pines, one of which bears both pine and cypress leaves. The village has many fruit trees, including more than 200 pear and jujube trees respectively. There is also a ginkgo tree standing by the stream, over 1,200 years old, 28 meters tall, with a diameter of 2.04 meters at breast height. From afar, the ginkgo tree looks like a sail billowing in the wind.

The terrain of Qingyuan Village is extremely unique, with two mountain ranges over a thousand meters in elevation facing each other across the narrow valley. The entire village resembles a boat, with its body nestled between screens and mirrors, and its head and tail forming a narrow pass — the throat through which one enters and exits the village, as well as a shield that completely shelters the settlement.

Legend has it that during the Taiping Rebellion, a unit of the Taiping Army advanced to the entrance of Qingyuan Village. Seeing the mountains closed off and the valley severed, they thought they had reached the end of the valley and thus turned back to Wucun to find another path. Later generations built a roadside shelter here, with the following ancient lines inscribed on its wall: “When mountains end and waters cease, doubting there’s no road ahead; then willows brighten and flowers bloom, revealing another village.”

Qingyuan Village enjoys high mountains, fresh air, fertile soil, heavy fog, and pristine, dust-free breezes. Its springs are crystal clear and imbued with a spiritual essence. When rapeseed flowers, pear blossoms, and peach blossoms are in full bloom, the villagers are enveloped in a scene of “golden mountains, silver seas, and rosy clouds.”

The special ecological microclimate causes the phenology here to be about half a month later than in the county town. It evokes the sentiment: “In the human realm, April’s blossoms have all faded away; but in the mountain temple, the peach blossoms have just begun to bloom. I long lamented spring’s departure with no trace to be found, unaware that it had come here instead.”

Here, the valleys are deep and serene, as broad as the Pan Valley of the Taihang Mountains and as beautiful as the Peach Blossom Spring of Wuling. Nestled atop the peaks of myriad mountains, it blocks the outside world while flourishing within, making it a refuge from chaos chosen by ancestors after careful selection.

Qingyuan is also known as Little Peach Blossom Spring, or simply Little Yuan. It is located in Duanxin Township, northeastern Wuyuan County, and was established during the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty. Inside the ancient pavilion “Bie You Tian” (A World Apart) at the village entrance, there remains an ancient quatrain: “Hidden in these empty mountains, wrapped in fine mist and rosy clouds, where no boats ply the waters nor carts the land, let the Central Plains be ravaged by war — the depths of the Peach Blossom Spring are my home.”
