Just as the man from Wuling in Tao Yuanming’s writings ventured into the Peach Blossom Spring, when you hike up the picturesque Gaohu Mountain in Zhoujiashan Village, Zhuyuan Township, Wuyuan County, and reach the mountainside shrouded in mist where the path seems to lead nowhere — a beautiful small mountain village suddenly comes into view: “with open land, neat houses, fertile fields, beautiful pools, mulberry and bamboo trees, crisscrossing paths, and the sounds of chickens and dogs.” What a paradise on earth it is — Zhoujiashan, a green pearl of Wuyuan, China’s most beautiful countryside, and a radiant gem still hidden deep in the mountains waiting to be discovered.

Zhoujiashan is located on the mountainside of Gaohu Mountain at the border between Jiangxi and Anhui. To the east lies Hongguan, home to the “Number One Camphor Tree of Southern China,” to the west is Likeng, a nationally renowned village for folk culture in Tuochuan, to the south is Fengshan and the Longtian Pagoda in Zheyuan Township, and to the north is Huangshan in Anhui. The area features undulating peaks and beautiful scenery. The village has 61 households and a population of 331. Zhoujiashan has been awarded the title of “Provincial Civilized Village” by the provincial Party committee and government for thirteen consecutive years. In 2003, it was designated as a model site for the “Virtue in the Countryside” campaign by the provincial women’s federation. From 2004 to 2005, it was honored as a model site for “Countryside Reading Rooms and the National Virtue in the Countryside” campaign by the Ministry of Culture and the All-China Women’s Federation. Zhoujiashan is beautiful, fertile, and evergreen all year round, making it an ideal destination for investment, tourism, leisure, and sightseeing.

The origin of the village name. Zhoujiashan was established during the mid-Ming Dynasty when the Zhou family from She County, Anhui, first migrated here. Later, the Zhou family moved away, and during the Qing Dynasty’s Qianlong era (1736–1795), Wang Wenshang from Xiaomaiyuan (i.e., the foot of Zheyuan Ridge) led his clansmen to settle here, officially naming the place Zhoujiashan. The village now houses the Wang Family Ancestral Hall — Shangyi Ancestral Hall — which contains many plaques, including an imperial plaque awarded by the capital honoring “Loyalty, Filial Piety, Chastity, and Righteousness,” and boards inscribed by historical figures such as Qing Dynasty Hanlin academicians Wang Zhengyuan, Wang Gui, and Wang Guandà, with titles like “Jingshan Fuyu.”

Zhuyuan Township: Zhuyuan is named after Zhuyuan Mountain (Zheyuan Ridge). According to the *Wuyuan County Annals*: “All waters in Wuyuan flow into Poyang Lake, except for this river, which flows eastward through Xiuzhou to Zhejiang, hence the name Zhuyuan.” It is the ancestral home of Zhan Tianyou, the father of China’s railways, and Jin Yong, the master of martial arts fiction.

Zhuyuan Township is located in the northern part of Wuyuan, bordering Huangshan City in Anhui Province. The township covers an area of 98 square kilometers and has a population of 15,000. A 38-kilometer secondary highway leads directly to Wuyuan County, and another 80-kilometer tertiary highway passes through the township over Zheyuan Ridge to Xiuning and then directly to Huangshan.
