Huangling Village

Huangling Village is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

At the foot of Shier Mountain in Wuyuan County lies the remarkable Huangling Village. The village has nearly 150 households, all of whose houses are built on a steep slope. The structure of the homes is unique: the front doors of the ground floor open onto the road, with the main hall just behind them; each house has a back door on the second floor, and a sky bridge leads to another road. The front of the second floor is walled off partway up and connected to horizontal wooden frames built outside the house, forming a system used for drying agricultural produce. This setup effectively solves the problem of building a village on a slope where there is no flat land for sun-drying crops. The villagers also use bamboo mats for drying, which take up little space and are easy to store. During harvest season, the spaces between the houses become a world of drying mats, with colorful crops layered against black rooftops — a truly spectacular sight. It is a paradise for painters and photographers, and photography works related to Huangling have won more than ten major national awards.

The entire village of Huangling shares the surname Cao, having migrated from Huangdun in She County. The Qing Dynasty Minister of Revenue Cao Wenqi and his son Cao Zhenyong — who served as Grand Secretary, Minister of the Grand Council, and Tutor to the Crown Prince — both of whom have been widely publicized in relation to the “World Cultural Heritage” site of Xidi Village in Anhui, originally came from Huangling. These facts are recorded in the Wuyuan County Annals.

Huangling Village has a history of about 500 years. At the entrance of the village, there are over 80 yew trees, each around 500 years old. Among the yews are also hidden square bamboos, Guanyin bamboos, and torreya trees. In the small square ponds outside the houses, various colored fish — red, green, black, white, and calico — are raised.

The most famous feature of Huangling Village is its "sun-drying culture." The village is built along the contours of the mountain, with very little flat land, which is why almost every household has wooden drying racks on the upper floors. By placing drying trays on these racks, villagers can sun-dry crops such as rice and chili peppers, among which the bright red chilies are especially popular with photography enthusiasts.

Transportation

The village is 39 kilometers from Wuyuan County Town. Transportation options are as follows:

1. Shuttle bus from Wuyuan County Town to Huangling: around 5 buses per day, fare approximately 10 RMB.

2. Take the bus to Jiangwan Town: every 20 minutes from 7:00–17:00, then transfer to a minivan or tricycle to the scenic area.

3. Transportation within the scenic area: ① Scenic sightseeing bus ② Cable car

② Ticket B: 120 RMB/person (includes free shuttle bus ride in the scenic area)
