Qinghua Town
Qinghua Town is a millennium-old ancient town. Besides the famous Song Dynasty covered bridge—Rainbow Bridge—there’s also the Tang Dynasty Old Street. This old street used to stretch five li in length, though only three li remain today. Yue Fei once wrote a poem when he visited Wuyuan: “The streets above and below span five li afar, with green-hung taverns lining the flower bridge.” Ride a bicycle along the town’s bluestone-paved paths, passing by ancient buildings and old shops one after another, as if stepping back into history. Qinghua’s Shuanghe Village was once connected to the Old Street via another covered bridge (demolished during the Cultural Revolution). It retains the same layout as the Old Street but is better preserved, with a wooden bridge on the right side of the village entrance still leading to the opposite village.
Qinghua Town is located in the northern part of Wuyuan County, Jiangxi Province, on the upper reaches of the Xingjiang River and at the southern foot of Zhanggong Mountain. It borders Zheyuan Township and Tuochuan Township to the east, Sikou Town to the south, Jialu Township to the west, and Zhangshan Township and Gutan Township to the north. Covering a total area of 127 square kilometers, it governs 8 village committees, 2 neighborhood committees, and has a population of over 16,000. It is 21 kilometers from the county seat, with convenient transportation. Three highways—Wangfu Line, Qingling Line, and Qingling Line—run through the area, making it a transportation hub in northern Wuyuan. With profound cultural heritage, it is known as a “millennium-old ancient town” and is one of Jiangxi Province’s 200 key established towns.
Qinghua is a millennium-old ancient town, named for its “clear streams winding around and radiant splendor.” In the 28th year of the Tang Dynasty’s Kaiyuan era (740 AD), Wuyuan County was established with its county seat in Qinghua. It was moved to Xian’gao (now Ziyang Town, the county seat) in the first year of the Tianfu era (901 AD), lasting 161 years. On the eve of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Qinghua belonged to Xinhua Township. In the early years of the PRC, it was part of Zhangxi District. In 1950, it became the seat of the county’s fifth district government, in 1958 it was the Qinghua People’s Commune, in 1960 it was changed to the Qinghua Branch of the state-owned Zhanggongshan Reclamation Farm, and in May 1984, it was restored as Qinghua Town.
Qinghua Town has a very long history. When Wuyuan County was established during the Kaiyuan era of the Tang Dynasty, its county seat was located here before being moved to Ziyang Town. The town has a main street lined with many shops. Away from the main street, in the bluestone alleys leading to Rainbow Bridge, you can see some old residential houses. Outside the town, you can see the Rainbow Bridge, which dates back 800 years to the Southern Song Dynasty. The bridge got its name from the Tang Dynasty poem “Two waters cradle a bright mirror, two bridges descend like rainbows.” It is a typical covered bridge, stretching 140 meters in total, consisting of six pavilions and five corridors forming a covered pedestrian bridge. Each pier has a pavilion, and the span between piers is called a corridor, hence it is also locally known as a covered pavilion bridge. This bridge is now a provincial-level cultural relic protection structure. Tuochuan Likeng: This is where the ancient architecture in Wuyuan County is most concentrated and best preserved. The road to the village is paved with bluestones, so walking on it doesn’t get muddy. At the village entrance, there is a covered bridge called “Liyuan Bridge,” exuding a strong cultural atmosphere. Major ancient buildings in the village include the “Heavenly Official Prime Minister Mansion” built by Ming Dynasty Ministry of Personnel Minister Yu Maozong, the “Jiamu Hall” built by late Ming Dynasty Guangzhou Prefect Yu Ziyan, as well as the “Sima Mansion” and “Nine Generations Under One Roof Building.”
