Wuyuan County has been building itself into “the most beautiful countryside in China” by shutting down polluting enterprises, developing a green economy, and vigorously protecting and improving the ecological environment to preserve its lush mountains and clear waters. The featured “Summer in Huangcun” shown here is one of the typical representations of Wuyuan. Huangcun is well known for its Hundred-Pillar Ancestral Hall.

The Hundred-Pillar Ancestral Hall of Huangcun in Wuyuan is a clan hall building constructed during the Kangxi reign of the Qing Dynasty. It serves as a site for the Huangcun family to worship their ancestors and esteemed figures. The hall is built with a brick-and-wood structure and consists of a courtyard, a gate tower, a main hall, a rear hall, and a rear sleeping quarters, covering an area of 1,200 square meters. In the center of the main hall hangs a plaque inscribed with the words “Jingyi Hall” (Hall of Scripture Meaning), written by Zhang Yushu, Grand Secretary of the Wenhua Hall in the Qing Dynasty. The main beams feature carvings such as “a mythical turtle spitting clouds” and “dragons and phoenixes bringing prosperity,” all exquisitely crafted. The four stone bases are engraved with patterns including “egrets playing among lotuses,” “phoenixes dancing with peonies,” “cranes ascending into clouds,” and “magpies holding plum blossoms,” reflecting the diligence, wisdom, and artistic creativity of the ancient Han people. A photo of this ancestral hall was exhibited in Paris, France in 1982. The clan hall records the glory and traditions of the family and serves as its sacred temple. As a symbol and emblem of the family’s long history and traditional culture, it holds unparalleled influence and historical value.
